Should You Take Melatonin or Magnesium for Sleep?

It is 11pm. You are in bed adding magnesium to the cart, on the phone that is part of the reason you are awake.

Buying it makes sense. Sleep is wrecking your days, and a bottle is the fastest thing on the shelf to try. Nobody needs to talk you out of wanting to sleep.

But before the order ships, here is the honest read on both.

Should you take melatonin or magnesium for sleep?

Maybe, as the second move. Both have a real but modest case, and neither one outruns afternoon caffeine, evening alcohol, and a screen at 11pm.

If those three are running, the bottle is polishing a window while the house leaks. Fix the inputs first. Then a supplement has something to work with.

Does melatonin actually work?

Melatonin is a timing signal, useful for shifting when sleep starts. It tells the body that night has arrived. It is weak as a knockout pill.

Research generally shows it earns its keep when the clock is off. Travel. A schedule that drifted late. A body that thinks midnight is evening. It moves the start line of sleep.

Most men use it like a sedative and take it at the wrong time. Then they conclude it does not work, when it was never going to work that way. If you want sedation, melatonin is the wrong aisle. If you want your body to start sleep earlier, it can help.

Does magnesium help you sleep?

The evidence is modest, and it helps some men. The men who run short on it seem to get the most back.

Research generally shows small improvements in how fast some people fall asleep and how settled the night feels. Small is the honest word. If your diet is thin on the foods that carry it, you are more likely to notice something. If you are not short on it, you will probably notice very little.

Worth a try for some men. A cure for almost none.

What is actually keeping you awake?

For most men over 40, three things. The afternoon coffee, the nightly pour, and the phone in bed.

Caffeine has a half-life of roughly five to six hours, so half of the 3pm cup is still working at 9pm. Alcohol gets you to sleep faster and then fragments the back half of the night, which is why six hours after bourbon feels worse than six hours without it. Read does alcohol ruin sleep if that one stings. And the phone holds the brain in daytime while you lie there waiting to feel sleepy.

If you are exhausted at 11 and wired at midnight, that pattern has its own explanation. Read why you cannot fall asleep when you are exhausted.

No capsule on the shelf beats subtracting those three.

What should you fix first?

The evening, for two weeks, before the bottle.

Move the last coffee earlier. End the pour earlier, or skip it. Get the phone out of the bed. Boring moves. They beat every supplement bundle I have ever watched a client buy.

I protect 7.5 hours minimum, every night. That floor did more for my energy and my 80 pounds of weight loss than anything I ever bought in a bottle. Broken sleep also ages more than your mornings, and you can see that drift in thirty seconds with the free metabolic age calculator.

Then, if your doctor has no objection, let a supplement polish the edges. Melatonin if your timing is off. Magnesium if you run short.

The bottle polishes. The evening decides.
